Event Description

Film and discussion about partisan redistricting causes, effects, and solutions.

Gerrymandering is the partisan manipulation of electoral districts for political gain. Pennsylvania is one of the most gerrymandered states in the union. Behind closed doors, despite the conflict of interest, lawmakers draw the borders of their own voting districts. Politicians are picking their voters, not the other way around. Many districts are no longer competitive. A growing number of candidates run unopposed. Voters feel their votes don’t count, and the gridlock in Harrisburg and Washington gets worse.

Gerrymandering is a 2010 documentary film, written and directed by Jeff Reichert, that takes a look at this powerful, but often hidden, element of the political process. It also chronicles a difficult, but ultimately successful, California effort to reform the process.

Following the 80-minute film, Diana Dakey, a volunteer speaker from Fair Districts PA, will provide an update about the movement to reform the redistricting process in Pennsylvania, to replace politicians with an independent citizens commission for the redistricting that will occur in 2021.
